Rüdesheim and the Rheingau Region
“For me only those areas are beautiful, which are usually called the rough and wild, since only these are exalted, only exalted areas can be beautiful, only these excite the thoughts of nature. But nothing is able to embellish and to increase the impression as much as the traces of human courage in the ruins of nature, bold castles atop wild rocks - monuments of the time of human heroes harking back to those higher heroic days of nature.”
These lines were written by Friedrich Schlegel in 1806 after travelling through the Rheingau along the river Rhine and they give an idea of just how impressive the region and its people were 200 years ago. This has remained the case to the present day. So why not come and find out for yourself?
The Rheingau region is situated between the state capital of Wiesbaden and the town of Lorch. Famed for its wines, it is one of the most important and best known wine growing areas in Germany. Connoisseurs also call it the “Weingau”, or “wine district”.
Rüdesheim lies here, nestling in the Taunus hills at the gateway to the UNESCO “Upper Middle Rhine Valley” world cultural heritage site. The hoteltraube Rüdesheim is situated at the heart of the town centre, directly alongside the river Rhine and just a few minutes on foot from the pulsating liveliness of the famous Drosselgasse.
Thanks to its location, the Rheingau region is the perfect spot for adventures in nature and the immediate vicinity. With its dry, warm summers and mild winters, the area offers a pleasant climate that makes trips on the Rhine past the Lorelei and active sports such as Nordic walking, cycling or hiking all the more enjoyable. Those who prefer peace and quiet can also simply spend their time on leisurely walks and discovering the surrounding sights.
World-famous vineyards, mediaeval villages, fortresses, castles, churches and monasteries, including the renowned Cistercian Eberbach Abbey from the film “The Name of the Rose”, all give the Rheingau its fascinating appeal. The homeland of the renowned healer, Hildegard of Bingen, was loved by such famous figures as Brentano and Brahms.
Those who don’t mind travelling a little further afield can also visit the capital of Hesse, Wiesbaden, known as the “Nice of the North”, or Mainz, the capital of Rhineland Palatinate, which are only a few kilometres away.
